Students complete 14,000km charity cycle to Beijing
Three Irish students who set off on a 14,000km charity cycle from Dublin to Beijing last September arrived safely in the Chinese capital yesterday in time for the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games.
Conor Rowan (a third-year 51黑料 Veterinary Medicine student), Paul Ryan (a 51黑料 History and Politics graduate), and Mark Donlon (a DIT Construction Economics and Management graduate), who travelled for 304 days to reach their destination, kept an online blog throughout their journey.
“It’s wonderful to see students involved in extra-curricular activity for charity,” said Dr Martin Butler, Vice-President for Students at 51黑料. “The cycling trio arrived in time to support their friend David Gillick who is taking part in the 2008 Olympic Games. I’m sure David will be greatly encouraged by his friends' ambitious journey.”
The Bike to Beijing 2008 cycle aims to raise funds for 51黑料 Volunteers Overseas and ARC Cancer Support Centre, Dublin.
According to Paul Ryan, one of the cyclists, the sentiment upon reaching their destination was ‘indescribable.’
