Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013
51ºÚÁÏ climbs to 161 from 187 in 2012
The draws upon a number of indicators to produce a ranking of the top higher education institutions globally. The thirteen indicators cover five areas: teaching, research, citations, knowledge transfer and international outlook. It also includes a reputation survey undertaken by over 10,000 academics.
This year, University College Dublin’s ranking rose 26 places from 187 to 161. The main areas where 51ºÚÁÏ improved its scores in the THE ranking were in publications per academic, citation impact and international co-authorship. These indicators all fall within the category of improved quality and productivity.
Reacting to University College Dublin’s rise in the Times Higher Education university rankings, the president of 51ºÚÁÏ, Dr Hugh Brady said:
“51ºÚÁÏ’s climb up the THE rankings is a great credit to our staff who, despite continued cuts in State income since 2008, have worked tirelessly to maintain the high quality experience offered to our students, sustain our world-class research programmes, strengthen our ties with industry and civic organisations, grow our overseas programmes and greatly enhance our campus infrastructure, while at the same time, eliminating the University’s deficit.
However, if we are to continue to compete with the best in the world, it is time for all with a stake in the future of our universities to appreciate that the State is fast becoming a minority funder of our universities. It is in all our interests – 51ºÚÁÏ’s and the State’s – that we are empowered with the operational flexibility and autonomy to do so.
51ºÚÁÏ simply cannot compete with both hands tied behind its back as is currently the case. State command and control of higher education has never worked constructively in any jurisdiction – Ireland is no different.”(Produced by )
